Waterbirds – Week 3

The waterbird count started off relatively slow this week due to unfavorable weather conditions. A West wind on April 6th led to some movement and gave the count momentum. This day brought the first Trumpeter Swans (7) and Canvasback (1).  Flocks of Mallard (30) and Northern Shoveler (4) were also spotted. Dabbling ducks are beginning to arrive and peak flights will occur by mid-April.

As winds shifted East on April 10th, the flood gates opened and produced the busiest count of the season. This flight consisted largely of Red-breasted Merganser (306) and Long-tailed Duck (762). A large push of aythya, mostly Redhead (491) and Lesser Scaup (59) included the first Ring-necked Ducks (5) of the spring. Common Goldeneye (97) are still a common sighting and staging numbers of Bufflehead (18) are quickly growing in the area. A highlight from the day was a significant push of Red-necked Grebe (234). Two groups of American Wigeon (9) and a Hooded Merganser (1) made first appearances of the season. The bird of the day had to be a lone Cackling Goose (1), traveling North among Canada Geese (162). The group gained height and flew directly over Mackinac Island!

Great Blue Herons (3) and Great Egrets (2) are returning as local marshes have thawed out. The next couple of weeks will be exciting as we approach peak migration.
