Spring Waterbird Count: Week 5

Spring migration has been stalled for much of this week. Colder winds from the North have resulted in less movement.

Gull diversity continues to add excitement to the count. A total of six species of gulls were spotted in the Straits on 04/22/23. This tally included two Lesser Black-backed Gulls, found resting among Herring Gulls at Pointe LaBarbe.

Caspian Terns have returned in small numbers. During the count, this species typically travels in pairs. Caspian Terns are known to partner up before arriving to their breeding grounds.

Impressive numbers of Long-tailed Ducks are now staging in the Straits. During a brief Southwest wind on 04/21/2023, over 3,500 were tallied streaming past McGulpin Point. During winter and migration, this species typically stays far from the shoreline. On calm days, passing freighters will reveal vast flocks on the waters surface.

Exciting finds continue to show up at the Straits State Harbor. This week included a female Harlequin Duck found resting and foraging on 04/23/23. Waterfowl numbers in the harbor have since declined, however, as a result of resuming ferry operations.
