Owl Banding 10/2/16

Point LaBarbe, St. Ignace, MI
Night of October 2th, 2016

After a night off due to rain, I was able to open nets last night and I banded a total of 40 owls, including our first Long-eared Owls of the season! Calm, North winds were favorable for migration, and there was a total of 37 Saw-whet Owls and 3 Long-eared Owls. During one net check there were 10 Saw-whets in the audio lure net! The 3 Long-eared Owls were all aged as after second year birds and were all female. 26 of the Saw-whets were female, 7 were male, and 4 were unknown. 13 of the females were aged as after second years, and the other 16 were hatch year birds. Of the males, all 7 caught were hatch year birds, and the 4 unknown birds were hatch years as well. What a night!
