Owl Banding 10/10/16

Point LaBarbe, St. Ignace, MI
Night of October 10th, 2016

Another calm night made for a slow but steady night of banding, totaling 20 new birds banded. 13 females, 1 male, and 6 unknown birds were netted. Of the 13 female birds, 10 were hatch years, and 3 were second year birds. The only male caught last night was aged as and after second year bird. Out of the 6 unknown birds, 4 were hatch year birds, 1 was a second year bird, and the last one was aged as an after second year bird. Another snowshoe hare was in the net at closing which made for a noisy extraction… if you’ve ever heard a rabbit scream! We’ve caught and banded a total of 224 Saw-whet owls and 3 Long-eared owls in 14 days of banding so far.
