MSRW was advised by Golden Eagle researcher Tricia Miller, that Athena, a radio tagged Golden Eagle, was headed north through Michigan and was almost to the Straits. Today, Friday, Athena probably crossed the Straits and Calvin counted her.
Even with the strong northwesterly winds (15 to 25 with higher gusts). There was a big movement of Golden Eagles today. Calvin reports “it was a very slow start to the day but a heavy movement of Golden Eagles was recorded between about 12:30 and 2:30. They were passing by in groups of 5 or 6 at a time with the largest single movement being about ten birds. Many were seen west of the count site heading NW but a good number were over the site as well.” Most of the Goldens were high and distant, however a few gave us good looks at them. Calvin counted a total of 75 Golden Eagles for the day. This is the second highest count since 85 in 2015.
