Fall Raptor Watch: Week 9

This week 9 has been the largest movement of raptors of the season thus far, at 3,634 raptors observed migrating over the count site. Species haven’t been too varied, with Turkey Vultures remaining the most common raptors at 54% of the migration followed again by Red-tailed Hawks at 34%. Leaving only 12% of the rest of our count this week made up of other species.

The first day of the week on 10/13 broke a daily record for this season and made up the majority of the numbers this week, ending with 2,175 raptors observed. October 14 was busy as well (though not nearly so as the previous day) at 905 counted raptors. An early season high for Red-shouldered hawks was recorded at 10 birds.

The rest of the week slowed down significantly, starting with only 80 raptors on 10/15 but a nice variety at least compared to the overwhelming Turkey Vulture and Red-tail numbers from the early week.

The next event of significance had us breaking a season high record of Turkey Vultures on 10/17. The previous record of 5,392 was set in 2021. After week 9 of 2024 we are pushing nearly 5,500 Turkey Vultures.

October 18 was another slow day but did offer some amazing close-up views of Rough-legged Hawks, of which five were observed. The first Snow Buntings of the season were also seen at the count site. Finally, the last day of week 9 was a great day for watching the Sharpies up close with another good bout of Rough-legged Hawks pushing through, and some Golden Eagles making an appearance for good measure.

The 2024 fall Raptor Count has been offering some excellent views and data for thus far, and we all wait with bated breath to see what the incoming end of the season has in store.
