Fall Owl Banding: Week 8

The season has come to a close, and we’ve closed our nets for the last time. This week we had a total of 30 birds, averaging at 8 a day with three weather days. Our highest night of the week was 17, and we had 4 BDOW and 2 LEOW in just this week. We got so many more larger owls this week than any of the other weeks, which was an interesting switch for the end of the season.

The season total is….. 732! A new high score, and also an even number, which is wonderful. Excluding the first week, which signified a late start to the season, we caught birds every single night that we netted. Out of the total opportunity days for netting, we netted 47 out of 56 days, the difference due to weather keeping nets closed some nights. Our highest day of the season continues to be 59.

Species totals are:
NSWO 719
BDOW 9
LEOW 7
SHHA 2
SWTH 1
BCCH 1

The last owl of the season was this lucky fella. 1124-70952:
(We forgot to math out two SHHA, so pretend the sign says 732 :))

Lucky for us, on our second to last night, the northern lights said farewell in the early morning around 0630, despite the daylight already beginning to creep into the sky.

Our favorite owls of the season are:

Peyton’s:

We want to thank everyone who came out and showed support and fascination for the owls. You made them feel special all over again, and we enjoyed getting to introduce and show such a wonderful species to so many new faces. And thank you to everyone who brought us food and snacks. We ate it all. We enjoyed it all. It kept our spirits high on those chilly nights.

With that, the season has ended. It was real. It was fun. It was real fun.

Signing out,
Peyton & Mary
