Fall Raptor Count: Week 8

As expected by now, count data varied from day-to-day, ranging from zero (no count conducted) on 10/9, to 951 on 10/14, the second-most productive day of the season.

2,288 raptors were observed this week, a slight decrease from the week before. The majority of these were turkey vultures, with 1,240 sightings accounting for 54% of the total. A season-high of 652 turkey-vultures were observed on 10/12.

Sharp-shinned hawk observations have finally dropped in numbers, with only 128 seen this week.

On the flip side, red-tailed hawks have finally begun to make their way south. 722 were observed this week, with a season high of 233 observed on 10/13.

On 10/14, a resident bald eagle was spotted landing in the lake where it then rowed itself with its wings to a small island nearby and was seen dragging a sizable fish onto shore!
