Common Loons

Common Loon movements have intensified in recent days. Yesterday had the count’s daily high of 140 from McGulpin Point with a steady stream throughout the day. Most were flying alone some were in loose pairs but there was one flock of nine. The majority of the loons passing through are in the midst of molting with speckles of their dull light grey non-breeding plumage covering their body. Today there was one resting on the water which tends to happen during stormy days like today. During foggy weather or at night near lakes at this time of year be sure to keep an ear out for their eerie wailing and look up too you just might see one!
